We recently completed an exceptional bespoke carpentry project here at Boam Joinery, creating a stunning European oak door and window frame for a customer in Derby. This particular commission showcased our expertise in traditional joinery techniques whilst incorporating modern security features, resulting in a perfect blend of classic craftsmanship and contemporary functionality.
The foundation of any outstanding joinery project lies in the quality of materials chosen. For this Derby installation, we sourced premium European oak, carefully selecting each piece for its grain pattern, durability, and natural beauty.
European oak offers superior strength and longevity compared to other timber options, making it the ideal choice for external applications where weather resistance is paramount.
We spent considerable time examining each board, looking for consistent grain patterns and making sure the wood was properly seasoned. This attention to detail during the selection process guarantees that the finished door and frame will stand the test of time whilst maintaining their stunning appearance for decades to come.
Working with European oak requires specialist knowledge and techniques that we've refined over many years of practice. The door construction involved traditional mortise and tenon joints, carefully cut by hand to achieve the precise fit that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match. Each joint was crafted with millimetre precision, resulting in a door that operates smoothly whilst maintaining structural integrity.
The window frame required equally meticulous attention to detail. We created clean, sharp lines that complement the door design whilst making sure the frame would accommodate modern glazing units. The smaller dimensions of the window presented unique challenges, requiring us to adapt our techniques to work within tighter tolerances.
Once the construction phase was complete, we moved to the finishing stage within of the project We applied a high-quality clear wax oil finish that penetrates deep into the oak fibres, providing excellent protection against moisture and UV damage whilst allowing the natural grain to shine through beautifully.
The clear wax oil finish was applied in multiple thin coats, with each application carefully sanded between coats to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. This process takes time and patience, but the results speak for themselves - a finish that protects the timber whilst highlighting the natural beauty of the European oak grain.
Security was a primary concern for our client, which is why we fitted Winkhaus heritage multipoint locking hardware. This premium locking system provides multiple locking points along the door frame, significantly improving security compared to traditional single-point locks whilst maintaining the classic aesthetic our customer preferred.
The Winkhaus system integrates seamlessly with our oak door design, with all hardware finished to complement the natural timber. The multipoint mechanism operates smoothly and quietly, providing peace of mind without compromising on the traditional appearance of the finished installation.
With the oak door and window frame now complete and finished to our exacting standards, the pieces are ready to leave our workshop for installation at the client's property. Each component has been carefully wrapped and protected to make sure they arrive on site in perfect condition.
Precise measurements and careful fitting will guarantee that both the door and window frame operate flawlessly whilst providing the security and weather protection our client requires.
