Boam Joinery was recently commissioned to design and build a bespoke front door that combined traditional craftsmanship with artisan glasswork, resulting in a stunning entrance that is as practical as it is beautiful.
The customer wanted a front door that would stand out for all the right reasons. Period character, exceptional quality, and longevity were all central to the brief. Accoya wood was specified from the outset, and the decision to collaborate with Lady Bay Art Glass on the decorative leaded panels brought the whole vision together.
Accoya is widely regarded as one of the finest materials available for exterior joinery. Produced through a process called acetylation, it is dimensionally stable, highly resistant to rot and swelling, and takes paint exceptionally well. For a front door that faces the elements day in and day out, it is a material that genuinely stands up to the job.
The clean, smooth finish of the heritage green paintwork on this door is a testament to that. The colour sits deep and even across the surface, with no lifting or unevenness, giving the door a premium appearance that will hold up for years to come.
The door is made up of five glazed panels in the upper half and three traditional raised and fielded timber panels below. This classic arrangement gives the door a grounded, well-proportioned look that feels in keeping with the character of the property without ever feeling dated.
The lower timber panels are crafted with the precision and clean detailing you would expect from a skilled joinery workshop, keeping the overall composition balanced and traditional.
The five decorative leaded glass panels were handcrafted by Lady Bay Art Glass and are, without question, the focal point of this door. The upper section features three arched panels filled with intricate jewel-toned geometric and floral motifs in ambers, blues, greens, and reds, each one carefully leaded and full of depth.
Below these sit two larger rectangular panels, each built around an elegant circular rose and quatrefoil design, surrounded by colourful textured glass segments that catch the light beautifully at different times of day. The craftsmanship on display in these panels is of the highest order, and the collaboration between Boam Joinery and Lady Bay Art Glass is a perfect example of what is achievable when two skilled trades work together.
This Gunthorpe installation is a celebration of traditional joinery at its best. From the Accoya timber at its core to the handmade leaded glass panels adorning its face, every element has been chosen and crafted with purpose.
