Boam Joinery recently completed a custom oak staircase project for a homeowner in Derbyshire. Our brief was to design and install a modern, contemporary staircase that would seamlessly fit into the client’s home while incorporating practical storage. The finished result involved crafting a winder staircase from solid European oak, complete with MDF treads and risers suitable for carpeting.
Before we began any physical work, we met with the client to explore their preferences and discuss the overall aesthetic of the proposed staircase. They requested a sleek, modern look that still showcased the natural beauty of oak. We spent time measuring the space and talking through different layouts, ensuring the custom staircase would fit the space available. Once we finalised the designs, we set out to manufacture all the components at our joinery workshop.
Our Joiners pay close attention to every detail, guaranteeing that each piece of timber is precisely cut, sanded and prepared accordingly. We focus on delivering a cohesive result that meets the client’s practical and visual needs. During this stage, we also incorporated plans for the under-stair storage area, which serves as a handy solution for organising shoes, coats and other items that often get left in the hallway.
Using solid European oak allowed us to achieve the modern and robust structure our client wanted. We selected this wood for its strength and timeless appearance, making sure the staircase would remain a focal point for years to come. The winder design required careful planning, as each turn needed to flow smoothly and support the weight of regular foot traffic. By combining our joinery expertise with careful installation methods, we maintained accuracy throughout the entire build.
For the treads and risers, we used MDF to accommodate the client’s choice of carpeting later on. This approach helps manage costs and gives a uniform base for the final floor covering. We then fitted the oak handrail and spindles, shaping the balustrade to follow the flow of the staircase. In doing so, we achieved a balanced combination of style and functionality.
The under-stair storage area blends into the rest of the design without taking away from the staircase’s clean lines. Each storage compartment opens effortlessly, allowing the client to quickly access whatever they choose to store. This thoughtful addition means the space underneath the staircase isn’t wasted, resulting in a tidier hallway.
We completed this entire project from the initial consultation to the final install, taking great pride in delivering a unique custom staircase in Derbyshire that was tailored to our client’s needs. The final look highlights the warm tones and grain patterns of the oak whilst creating a practical solution that suits everyday life. If you’re considering a custom staircase in Derbyshire or beyond, we’d be delighted to discuss how we can help bring your vision to life.
